WMA at the European Championships 2015

Mr Whitlock and Ms Heredi have just returned from the European Championships in Motherwell, Scotland.

After months of preparation, illness, injury and other unwanted distractions aside, with the ITF England national team, they were both present representing WMA, PUMA and their country they had sights set on gold.

The 4 day competition brought lots of highs and lows for the pair. We are particularly proud of Aniko who brought home a great medal haul consisting of-

Silver in individual female heavyweight sparring, silver in female power test, silver in female team sparring, bronze in team power test, and a token bronze as the 6th person in female team patterns. A massive well done Aniko from everyone at WMA!

Mr Whitlock competed in- team patterns, losing to the always strong team from Poland. Individual male -78kg sparring losing a close fight to Ludvig Saele from Norway. And finally in team sparring where we lost a nail biting quarter finals to current World Champions Ireland 10-9! It was a disappointing championships for Mr Whitlock, but lessons were learnt and he will be back stronger next year.

Overall the England team did very well, coming 8th out of 24 countries. We had 3 new individual European champions and most importantly- we came back with more medals than last year. The team is forever growing under the guidance of our fantastic coaching team, of which a big thank you goes to them from both of our athletes.

Now it is time to regroup and look to the next competition which will be the PUMA British championships, which a large contingent of our WMA students young and old(er) will be attending.

Finally a thank you to the tournament organisers, the masters, PUMA, and everyone that helped make this a great experience.

WMA’s first Black belt!

I am over the moon to announce our first ever student to grade to black belt! Young Mr Gould has worked tirelessly over the last few, well.. years, to achieve his black belt. He trains 6 hours a week in WMA classes as well as spending hours of his own time to get here. He is a fantastic role model for the other junior and senior students, and it is a real pleasure and honour to see him with a black belt and new dobok around and on him. He has now paved the way for other students to start coming through the ranks and achieve that big goal, like the rest of the Gould clan that have supported him and trained alongside with the whole WMA family.

He is also been promoted to a junior assistant instructor, with his official PUMA assistant instructor qualification to start soon.

A massive well done to Mr Gould from myself, Mr Whitlock, and all of us at WMA… The journey has just begun, and the hard work starts now 😉

We will be having a WMA social/congratulations party on Saturday the 17th of October at the Beaufort pub in Stoke Gifford from 6 pm children, adults, family, friends, all are welcome. The official presentation evening will be on Sunday the 18th of October at The Holiday Inn, Filton Rd, Bristol, South Gloucestershire BS16 1QX email Mr Whitlock @ for more details.

Competition Success

Well it’s been a busy few months for WMA. Firstly we had the ITF World Championships in Italy, where 3 of our members/instructors were representing England and came back with an amazing 4 bronze medals between them.

To even get to a World championships is an extremely hard slog, very few can even dream of making the England team, let alone make the team and then win medals for our country! I think I speak on behalf of all WMA members a massive well done to the ‘Whitlock Brothers’ and Miss Aniko Heredi on such a valiant effort.

wma at the worlds

A few weeks later it was time for the PUMA English championships! Where we had 13 members competing, a fantastic turn out and a fantastic medal haul-

13 members- 3x Gold medals, 3x Silver Medals and 2x Bronze medals!

Amazing. Well done to everyone that was there on the day. Competitors, parents, referees. A valiant effort from everyone. And personally I would like to say it genuinely meant a lot, the amount of juniors and parents that stayed to watch me (Mr Whitlock) compete. The team work and camaraderie is what competing is all about. Congrats to everyone. Onwards and upwards!

2nd night at Link Club.. Success!

Last night 3 juniors accompanied Mr Whitlock to our monthly visit at ‘Link Club’, a club for adults with learning disabilities. Because of the community centre being used as a polling station for the general election, we did not have our normal space upstairs. So we improvised, pushed some chairs to the side and opened with a demonstration. The 3 juniors performed patterns, pad work and sparring for the club members. They showed great courage and confidence getting up infant of everyone and showing them what they were made of; and they executed it beautifully.

We opened the forum with some pad work, although a bit shy this week a number of people got up and tried their go on the pads. Our trip is aimed at fun, and some light fitness. We I think we achieved. I have already had feed back from the organisers saying they were very impressed with our display and were looking forward to seeing us again next month.

A massive thank you to the juniors and parents that gave up an hour of their time to put some smiles on faces. A lot of martial arts schools talk about philosophy and giving back, but only some do. I’m very pleased to say we’re on the ‘do’ list. Well done team. Same again next month!

Grading Success.. again!

Over the last week and a half both the Little PUMA’s graded, and a number of juniors and adults graded under Senior Master Gayle.

The juniors and adults were fantastic as normal, we didn’t have too many students going in for the grading this time. We pride ourselves on our standards. If Mr Whitlock does not think you’re ready top grade, he won’t put you in, hence our very high pass rate.

It was a particularly testing day for Mr Whitlock, who had squad training in the morning, then left early to get to the Yate grading, then onto to teach normal Sunday classes, and then went onto the Bath grading where the ‘Carter Clan’ graded in the evening, even after Jim and Clare ran a 10k race in the morning! The testing day as made a lot easier by everyone’s great performances and more importantly, everyones great attitudes!

The week after it was the Little PUMA’s turn, and they did not disappoint. The examiners were Mr Michael Whitlock and Miss Aniko Heredi, both of the England team. The 4-6 yrs old elevated their performances to well above the required standard. Showing great, punches, kicks, blocks, attitudes and courtesy.

Now it’s all over.. for another 3 months then back to it again. In the meantime we have 3 black stripes preparing for their (and WMA’s) first black belt gradings!.. scary stuff!
